recording sessions with backstage orchestra began 29.4.2004 at slavomir glos home studio with strings quartet of k.kudjová, i.remenec, s.glos and m.pukl. 
next session included doublebass (p. mečiar) and trombone (dano drábik), together with original band tracks 'oh, darling (ride for charlie and ginger)' and 'another fine day' performed by OGO.
end title song ´with head in the clouds´ ispired by film is peter’s return in moods to fusion explosion tastes project.

score is oversea cooperation with adam wareham, australian director on his debut short film about ordinary school-day which turns to be quite less ordinary day, if not the last.

original short film soundtrack

animals is no budget, epical, short amateur film, called by its authors ‘the shortest film myth'. live recording of its score was similiar challenge as for making the film itself.

peter pikna and backstage orchestra aimed to record 14’ score for ten instruments (2 violin, viola, violoncello, bass, trumpet, trombone, french horn, flute, clarinet), percussions and six pieces choir.

main theme consists of four motives. besides original motives peter pikna uses three-note straussian ‘humanic’ hail and another simple melody from folk tune medveďku daj labku (also singed by choir), because of their archetypical and ironic quality, taking challenge of composing variations.”

five tracks covers three ‘timelines’- prehistoric time is based mainly on rhytm and percussions. magic time suggest melodic polyphony of romantism, while the longest, the third part of postmodern time is focused on sound of more conterporary film music.

new music to heighten dramatical content of mostly slapstick ska musicscape of 'metafora films' splatter-based "nosferatu" mute film.

with sampleworks for small orchestra with piano and six-piece choir peter developed three new motivs: the diggers, the treasure and theme for otto's diary, together meshed in final march of the vampires theme with derived phrases of film's original organ motiv  for nosferatu as for vampire reference.
special r'n'b track pounch! parodes rap style for street-castlefight scene.

vocals for choir and solo violin parts were performed by peter pikna and ivo remenec.

student's film 'inside him' stylistically illustrates inner dilemma of man finding balance in his life.

his home is his head- while in disorder state of loosing man's other life-profile, "body", peter uses synth and quartet strings with detuned notes of acoustic guitar and percussions ('between me and me' cue). jazz band with keyboards plays groove tune, while main character is in a "happy body" which finds a girlfriend for himself ('nice sunny day' cue).

'air conflicts' is the world war 2 arcade air battles computer game.

player can choose from the three sides of the conflict in europe, western asia& northern africa region; german, british and russian air force.

in music, these triple motives -three sides and three locations-  are meshed together with another three principles: toy-concept of game, seriousness of war subject and air battles as metaphor of making love (or war/game addiction? ;-).

three themes for each side of the conflict are in conjuction with 'kiss me in the sky' game theme, serving as main the title song (actually not singed). full nazi, raf and russian themes can be heard in patrol tracks, for each side their own. six battle tracks are randomly* played during missions and featuring melodic and rhytmical variations of the three themes plus 'kiss me in the sky' main theme.

backstage orchestra recorded selected string and trumpet parts. arrangement of the orchestra is 'classical', also in underscoring north-african battles, with using only small hand cymbal percussions as more 'exotic' instrument.
for 'kiss me in the sky' and especialiy its score table remix, there was used a "bigband" section with with the drums and saxophones.

*due of lack of the time in developing phase, random selection was reduced to simple random algorythm, instead of peter's designed random-ratio evolving system.

devil's book (dáblova kniha)

virtual film soundtrack/music adaptation (2002/4)

„virtual soundtrack“ project is scenical music composition in full dramatical scale: creating of themes, motifs, their variations and use in context of story- film music without the film.
peter choose written 'classic' horror short story by ondrej vencovský: the devil’s book. Selected scenes were sketched into film flow on which music was composed.
scenes of devil’s book offered possibilities from epical climaxes to introvert tensions, with using of melody, abstract as far as dissonance approach.
composition was made in summer 2002, but peter could continued on project as far as next year:  finishing choirs and to finalize mix. Work contains live-recorded parts of percussions, boy soprano, violin and violoncello.

music’s timing is compromise between virtual film and guessed reading speed to accompany reading the short story. 

beside Devil's book musical adaptation, album contains also Uncle Estwan strings suite; original composition performed by Backstage Orchestra. more on that in Backstage Orchestra section.

written for 3 violins, 2 violas, violoncello and doublebass. suite was released as bonus track on devil's book virtual film soundtrack project, online through www.hlbokyhrob.sk. 

story:

as background for motifs and mood, peter pikna sketched a rather classical, yet still tempting and mysterious story about enigmatic old man.

lucia droppova, writer&co-producer of short film animals took the plot and she’s developing estwan’s world in her unique storyline and stylistical vision.

...uncle estwan is stranger, making even more strange experiments in his castle, who falls in fatal love with girl from town under his castle. conflict between him and girl's clumsy noble fiancé grows into revolt of townsfolk against uncle, who gets on trace of something unbelievable…
